The Railways Pension Scheme is an industry-wide pension scheme providing benefits to employees in the rail industry. The RPS has Defined Benefit (DB) and Defined Contribution (DC) Sections.
The following First Rail businesses participate in the RPS:
- All Train Operating Companies operating rail services under contract from the Department for Transport, including Great Western Railways, South Western Railway and Avanti West Coast
- Hull Trains
- Tram Operations

Tram Operations employees who were employed before April 2015 may also have preserved benefits in The FirstGroup Pension Scheme and/or an account with the First Bus Retirement Savings Plan.
First Rail employees who aren’t eligible to join the Railways Pension Scheme will be automatically enrolled into the ELSP.
